Network+ DHCP relay, reservations and exhausted pools
DHCP leases addresses and supplies client configuration. A relay is needed when clients and the authorized server are separated by a routed boundary without another local service. Reservations provide predictable assignments, and exclusions protect addresses allocated outside the dynamic pool. If existing clients work but new clients cannot obtain leases, inspect free pool capacity as well as reachability and server status.
How to read the scenario
A reservation and a manually configured static address are different mechanisms. Document both so the same address is not allocated twice.
Identify the required outcome, the evidence already provided, and the limits on the technician’s action. Compare every option against those details before deciding. Record why the closest alternative does not meet the stated need.
Original practice example
A client VLAN has no local DHCP server, but an authorized server exists on another routed network. Which function forwards the requests?
- DHCP reservation
- DHCP relay
- DHCP exclusion
- DHCP lease duration
Show the answer and explanation
