Network+ latency, jitter and packet loss
Latency measures delay, jitter measures variation in delay, and packet loss measures traffic that does not arrive. Congestion can worsen all three, but high delay can also reflect distance or processing. Voice and interactive applications may suffer even when a bandwidth test looks acceptable. Compare measurements across a known-good baseline and isolate wireless, local, and WAN segments before proposing a remedy.
How to read the scenario
QoS can prioritize important traffic at a bottleneck. It cannot create bandwidth or remove every cause of delay.
Identify the required outcome, the evidence already provided, and the limits on the technician’s action. Compare every option against those details before deciding. Record why the closest alternative does not meet the stated need.
Original practice example
A WAN link is saturated and its queues grow during backups, slowing interactive traffic. Which performance condition is present?
- Congestion
- Jitter
- Packet loss
- Latency
Show the answer and explanation
Congestion
Congestion occurs when demand exceeds forwarding capacity, causing queues and possibly drops.
