Network+ RTO and RPO: recovery time versus data loss

RTO describes the target time to restore a service. RPO describes the acceptable data-loss window. A recovery design must satisfy both: restoring an old backup very quickly may meet a time target while losing too much recent data. MTTR and MTBF are operational reliability measures, not substitutes for agreed recovery objectives. Test the plan with representative workloads and dependencies.

How to read the scenario

Ask whether the scenario discusses downtime, lost changes, repair duration, or failure frequency before selecting the metric.

Identify the required outcome, the evidence already provided, and the limits on the technician’s action. Compare every option against those details before deciding. Record why the closest alternative does not meet the stated need.

Original practice example

A business says a network service must be restored within two hours after an outage. Which recovery metric expresses this target?
